1. Determine the importance of location.
Is a top-floor apartment a must? Or a corner unit with a view of the amenity space? Or perhaps a west-facing balcony for the best sunset views?
Determining how important the location is on the floor and within the community will help you narrow down your available options.
2. Consider the bedroom placement.
Bedroom placement is important when considering which floor plan is best for you.
Do you have a roommate and prefer to be on opposite sides of the apartment? Or want very similar bedroom styles? Look for floor plans that separate the bedrooms with the living room space to give you more privacy.
Or, do you have children and want to make sure they are close by? Look for a floor plan that places the bedrooms closer together, making it easier to quickly check on your kids in the middle of the night.
Determining where you want the bedrooms located can quickly help you narrow down your choices.
3. Imagine your belongings in the space.
Visualize how you would arrange your furniture and decorations in floor plans you are considering.
If you have two oversized couches you’re in love with, look for a floor plan with a larger living room area.
If cooking is your jam, look for a layout that maximizes storage to accommodate all your kitchen gadgets or includes a large island or peninsula for more cooking space.
Picturing what you already own in your future space can help narrow down what will work best for you.
4. Think about your day-to-day needs.
Think about your specific needs and how you’ll use your space on a daily basis.
Do you work from home regularly and need to ensure you’ll have room for a desk? Consider floor plans with an office nook, a den or even a second bedroom.
Do you need extra storage space to house hobby items or additional belongings? Consider a floor plan close to a detached garage for rent. Or, depending on the community, consider a floor plan with an attached garage included.
5. Choose your favorite design scheme.
This may be one of the easiest — and most fun — decisions to make when deciding on a new apartment.
When envisioning your belongings in a floor plan, think about how they would look with each interior color scheme. Which feels the most “you?”
If you’re having a hard time deciding between two, think about which one you were initially drawn to. As the saying goes, trust your gut instinct.
Decisions can be tough, but if you follow these tips, you can easily find your perfect floor plan match.
